Dear Parents and Students Antelope Valley High School,
I would like to welcome you all to Antelope Valley High School. I am very excited to be the Principal at AVHS again this year as we celebrate the graduation of the Class of 2018! The 2017-2018 school year promises to be another exciting year for our students and staff. The staff at AV is committed to providing you an educational experience that prepares you academically and socially to thrive in this challenging world, both locally and globally.
I would like to share some information and thoughts with you to ensure a smooth opening to the school year. The first day of school is Monday, August 7th. We begin our day at AVHS promptly at 7:20 am with 1st period. We will have TWO Flex Days the first week of school, Monday, August 7th and our normally scheduled Flex Day on Wednesday, August 9th. Please plan on your student being dismissed at 1:07 pm on these days and make the necessary arrangements for him/her to get home from school.
Please note that school office hours are 7:00 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday.
Key information regarding student grades, attendance, and announcements will be communicated via the ParentLink App to both parents and students. This app can be downloaded onto your Apple or Android smart phone. To download on your Apple or Android device please see the instructions on the last page of this newsletter (page 14).
Student pick up and drop off is located at the north end of the High School in the Student Parking Lot (by the football stadium) and behind the school by the PE fields near 3rd street. Please do not use the administration parking lot in front of the school as a drop off /pick up location as it not conducive to high volumes of traffic and poses a safety risk for students. Any student dropped off in the front of the school will be directed to the entrance north of the band room. It is our anticipation that traffic on the first day, and most likely the first few weeks, will be heavier than normal. A great way to reduce some first-day stress is to plan to arrive by 7:00 am. This helps avoid high volumes of traffic and allows our instructors to begin instruction precisely at 7:20 am. Antelope Valley High School values instructional time and places a high priority on Bell-to-Bell instruction.
Students will pick up their schedules and ID’s on the first day of school beginning at 7:00 am. Lists will be posted around campus to direct students to specific classrooms to pick up their schedules. In addition, there will be many staff members outside helping to assist students to their classrooms. As per Board Policy and District expectations, students must wear their ID badges at all times while on campus and at school events. AVHS Staff will be diligent in making sure that students have AND wear their ID’s. The rationale is, and always will be, to contribute to the safety of our campus. Please remind your student of the importance of wearing his/her student ID while on campus.
Antelope Valley High School realizes that too many phone messages can be overwhelming, so we will try very hard to minimize the number of School Messenger phone calls from the school. It is our intent to limit our calls only to information that we feel is vital for each AV High household. With this in mind, please call or e-mail to let us know if you need to update your phone number with the school. We can be reached at (661) 948-8552, ext. 168 or via e-mail to email@example.com.
Take advantage of attending this great school and encourage your student to get involved. Know that the staff here at AVHS has made it our mission to assist you in going wherever it is you want to go and remember that we are THE Antelope Valley High School!
See you on the 7th!
Dr. Jodie Radford
